Kris Kindelsperger served on CASE V Selection Committee

CASE V asked Kris Kindelsperger to serve on the selection committee for the CASE V Chief Executive Leadership Award this year. The award recognizes institution heads, presidents, chancellors, system heads, or other campus chief executive officers who serve at CASE institutions for their exemplary work in promoting and supporting education. Recipients were announced at the opening ceremony for the District V conference in Chicago on December 10, 2006.

JGA to sponsor Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University’s 19th Annual Symposium

JGA was pleased to sponsor the Center on Philanthropy’s 2006 symposium, “Health and Philanthropy: Leveraging Change.” The program, which was held on August 24-25, was focused on philanthropy’s role in health in the United States as well as around the world. Sessions included topics such as public policy, funding for research, disaster relief, corporate issues, information technology, and the nursing shortage. 2006 International Citizen of the Year Dinner Sponsorship

JGA was a recent sponsor of the 2006 International Citizen of the Year Dinner honoring Randall L. Tobias, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator. Each year since 1985, the International Center of Indianapolis honors “a foreign-born or Indiana resident who has made an outstanding contribution to Indiana and the world in the fields of business, culture, education, government, medicine, media research, sports, or community service.” Formerly President, Chairman, and CEO of Eli Lilly and Company, 2006 recipient Randall L. Tobias has been working to help the U.S. government combat HIV/AIDS since 1993. He was recognized at the dinner on May 15, 2006, at the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis.

On April 7, 2006, Ted Grossnickle and Angela White presented at the Annual I-CASE Conference on the topic of “Benchmarks for Development: What to Measure and How to Make Use of Them for Improved Results and Accountability .” The spring conference provided a one-day program for members with relevant and timely topics in advancement for area professionals. I-CASE is affiliated with the national Council for Advancement and Support of Education, based in Washington, D.C. For more information about the I-CASE, access www.i-case.org.

On April 10-11, 2006, Ted Grossnickle and Angela White took on another presentation at the Governor’s Conference for Service and Volunteerism in Indianapolis. Their presentation focused on “Empowering Board Members to Speak on Your Behalf.” The Governor’s Conference is designed to “celebrate, rejuvenate, and inspire” those who use their time and talents to serve others in Indiana.

Eugene Tempel: Outlook for 2006

CASE V Conference, December 10-13, 2005, Chicago, Illinois

JGA was pleased to sponsor the Development Track at CASE V conference this year. Kris Kindelsperger presented “The Challenges of Managing Staff, Volunteers, and the President in a Capital Campaign Mode” with Cameron McGuire, Vice President for University Advancement, Butler University, and Kathryn G. Betley, University Trustee and Vice Chair, ButlerRising Campaign, Butler University, on Tuesday, December 13. They addressed the significant management challenges to the development office and the university brought on by a capital campaign and how staff, the Campaign Cabinet, and the President can use a development audit, campaign feasibility study, and other tools to plan and execute a successful campaign. In addition, Ted Grossnickle served on a panel with Mark Jones, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at St. Norbert College, and Jane Mathison, Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Oberlin College that addressed “Working Strategically with your Board,” on Sunday, December 11.

Ernie Vargo interviewed for article on family giving

The November 21 issue of the Indianapolis Business Journal’s article on passing down philanthropic habits to the next generation includes comments from Ernie Vargo of JGA. The article, “Rallying around Charity” describes the notion of educating children and youth on the value of giving–in the context of the Van Riper Woodard Family Foundation charity road rally. Woodard explains that he gets involved in the charities they support–along with their entire family. Vargo talked about the fact that giving is not “automatic” today; that it must be taught and experienced at home.

Indiana Grantmakers Alliance conference a success

The Indiana Grantmaker’s Alliance Fall Conference was held on November 3, 2005. The conference, “Grantmaking: History in the Making,” was held at the Indianapolis Marriott North at Kestone and the Crossing. In a new format this year, a Grantmakers/Grantseekers Symposium was held on Thursday, November 3rd, followed by a reception and dinner featuring Ms. Ruby Bridges. On October 15th, Ted Grossnickle led discussion at Hanover College’s Board of Trustees meeting on Board Member Roles and Responsibilities. Ted was also the featured presenter at the Leadership Johnson County Fundraising and Fellowship Seminar on October 18th. His topic was fundraising for community leadership programs.

Ted Grossnickle and Angela White presented “Plotting Your Course as Development Professionals” at the Greater Cincinnati AFP One Day Conference, “Charting Your Course,” on September 22, 2005, at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. Indiana Fund Raising Day, October 6, 2005

JGA was proud to sponsor Bernard Ross, Director of The Management Centre in London, as keynote speaker for Indiana Fund Raising Day. Mr. Ross is an expert in strategic thinking, organizational change, and personal effectiveness. He kicked off the conference with his address at 8:00 a.m. and spoke during two afternoon sessions as well. The conference was held at University Place Conference Center and Hotel in Indianapolis.

Ernie Vargo and Angela White presented at Indiana Fund Raising Day on October 6. Ernie’s topic was “Board and Staff Roles and Responsibilities,” which examined how board and staff members can work together to create and maintain a well-functioning organization. Angela discussed “How to Improve Your Accountability,” covering effective ways to improve your organization’s accountability, including roles for board and staff.

Center on Philanthropy symposium sponsorship

JGA was pleased to be a sponsor of The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University’s 18th Annual Symposium, “Women and Philanthropy: Gaining Momentum,” held August 25-26, 2005. JGA has sponsored previous symposiums, and Ted Grossnickle serves on the IUCOP board. JGA is proud to be working with Women’s Fund of Central Indiana and is sponsoring this event in honor of Women’s Fund.

JGA consultants accept board positions

Angela White recently became a board member for NPower Indiana, a nonprofit organization serving as a “technology advisor, facilitator, and service provider to nonprofits” in Marion County and surrounding counties in central Indiana. NPower helps nonprofit groups to affordably solve technology problems and provides access to products and services, with the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in technology.

Meg Gammage-Tucker recently joined the board of Central Indiana Land Trust Inc. (CILTI), a nonprofit corporation created to “protect natural spaces in the face of increasing urban sprawl.” Founded in 1990, CILTI works with communities and landowners to protect their land and educate the public on the importance of proper management and care of our environment.

Eva Aldrich has been named to the inaugural board of Johnson County Habitat for Humanity, a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit organization that builds or refurbishes homes for families in need all over the world.

JGA intern finshes work

Betsy Hummel, a senior at Franklin College, completed an internship position with Johnson, Grossnickle and Associates, Inc., in May. Betsy assisted with JGA’s marketing and communication efforts this sprint and graduated with a degree in Journalism.

“Strategically Developing Resources” was the topic for the upcoming Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) conference on April 25 and 26, 2005, offered in conjunction with the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance. Ernie and Angela presented “That Is Why We Hired You; What the Board Can and Cannot Expect from Their Development Director or Consultant,” on April 25.

On April 1, 2005, Arts Alliance Indiana, Inc., celebrated its 5th Annual Arts Conference titled “Making Meaning II: Creative Journeys in Ourselves, Our Work & Our Communities.” Ernie Vargo presented “Whose Job Is It Anyway; Board vs. Staff Roles and Responsibilities” at the conference. On March 6 and 7, 2005, Indiana Youth Services held a Board Development Conference for the Boards of Directors and Executive Directors for all Youth Service Bureaus in Indiana. Ernie Vargo and Angela White presented two consecutive workshops beginning at 9:00 a.m. on March 7 on the topic of the roles and responsibilities of board vs. management.

Angela White presented “You Can’t Handle the Truth! Ten Ways to Improve Your Accountability,” on Friday, March 11, 2005, from 10:45-noon, at IAUW’s annual conference. Johnson, Grossnickle and Associates has relocated to Greenwood, Indiana, effective February 1, 2005. The new office is located in South Park, an office complex off Main Street in Greenwood, near I-65. The new space provides expanded work space and closer proximity to Indianapolis. New JGA associate on board

JGA is pleased to announce that Meg Gammage-Tucker, Ph.D., CFRE, has joined JGA as Senior Associate, effective December 15, 2004. She previously served as Director of Advancement for the Indiana Repertory Theatre, Inc. Gammage-Tucker has been a nonprofit professional for more than 20 years and has held several other professional positions, including director of development and marketing, Pleasant Run, Inc.; director of development and membership, Indianapolis Museum of Art; director of institutional advancement, Indianapolis Zoological Society; and vice president for institutional advancement of the Wilds. She also recently served as president of The Rhino Trust, an international organization dedicated to funding wildlife conservation, education, and research. JGA is proud to have Meg as a part of our team.

JGA sponsors AFP Foundation Award

Again this year, JGA sponsored the Outstanding Foundation Award at the Philanthropy Awards Dinner, which was held on November 15, 2004, in Indianapolis. Topics included: historical patterns of black philanthropy; research on giving; faith-based community initiatives; stories of personal philanthropy; and grant maker and fundraiser perspectives on black philanthropy.
